What was the worst job you ever had?

Wal*Mart cashier. For reference, Wal*Mart toy department - not that bad. Check-out cahsier - horrible.

It was college, I was working three jobs at one point. Who hires inexperienced college kids with flexible hours? Uncle Sam (Walton).

Working in toys, it was monotonous but a perfectly respectable slack college student job. Pick up toys, put away toys. Answer phone calls from rabid mothers looking for the latest "it" toy. After Christmas, they didn't need me there, so I was moved to where they always need people: Check out hell.

I would have $10,000 in cash in my register at any time. It was stressful. People were rude. People couldn't count their change. People would inevitably not have enough money to buy their Big Mouth Billy Bass. My supervisor called me 'honey' and 'sugar.' Not in the nice Southern way.

After moving to check-out, I got out of there as fast as I could. That's probably where my overwhelming aversion to Wal*Mart started. Now I can't even go in one without having breaking out in hives.

Yeah, I gave Wal-Mart about a month of my time back in '95. Actually it was the one out by Wilmington Island. I worked "Peak-time" in the hardware department. The funny thing was that whenever I was working, there was no one in the housewares section, and when the guy from the pets department had to go on break, I ended up having to try and catch fish for 5 year olds (they are picky about their minnows) while being constantly paged over the intercom to assist people in the paint department. It was the only job I've ever given a two hour notice as opposed to two weeks.

As much as I can't stand Wal-Mart, I wish there was one in Brooklyn, because our Target store here really needs some competition.
